FAQs

Why Zouk?

Zouk is an amazingly flexible and expressive dance. It can be fast or slow, fun, sad, emotive, connected and everything in between.

It also happens to be able to be danced to most contemporary music which means you can dance anywhere anytime!

What level should I enrol in?

If you don’t have any Zouk experience, Level 1 is the place to start. Note that Zouk is fairly different to other dance styles, so even if you have other dance experience we still recommend starting there.

If you have Zouk experience, it’s best to talk to one of the instructors to decide where best to jump in (feel free to use the contact us page!).

Can I start mid term?

Starting mid term depends entirely on your Zouk skill. If you’re just starting out, we don’t recommend it, but if you have previous experience with Zouk, best have a chat with the instructors to see if you can jump in!

You’re also welcome to jump in for a single class if you find you have some spare time (noting the above).

Can I pay on the day?

We do offer credit card facilities at the studio, but prefer if you could book and pay online.

I don’t have a dance partner, can I come by myself?

Absolutely! We rotate partners throughout the class because everyone dances differently and it’s good practice dancing with different people. We also work to balance the classes with equal leads and follows to make sure it everyone gets to dance.

I’m scared….

Don’t be! Even if you don’t have any dance experience and have three left feet, you can learn Zouk!

Level 1 is designed to teach you how to hear the music, move to the beat and it covers all the basics you need to be dancing. It also happens to be a lot of fun.

I’m a lead and want to follow (or vice versa)

Heck yes! We are a fully inclusive school and strongly recommend learning the other side of the Zouk coin. So, if you’re a male and want to feel pretty being led around the dance floor (like Bill does) then you do you and we’ll fully support you! Exactly the same for Ladies wanting to lead.

Just flag your preference when you sign up so we can keep an eye on class balance.

What clothes should I wear?

We recommend wearing comfortable, casual clothing, clothes that you could comfortably walk around in for an hour. For hot days or if you’re taking multiple classes, a second shirt is also recommended - remember you’ll be dancing with a partner!

What shoes should I wear?

For Level 1 any shoe will do, but try to avoid super grippy ones if possible. In higher levels we recommend smooth sole shoes, such as jazz shoes, flats, or dance shoes.

We don’t recommend wearing heels for Zouk, as it gets far harder to perform tilted turns and the like.

Anything else I should bring?

On top of comfortable clothes and shoes (see above), we also recommend bringing a water bottle and your phone to film demos if you want. We also recommend breath mints, hand sanitiser and deodorant, especially if it’s a hot day or you’re taking multiple classes.

Consider creating a Zouk “go-bag” with everything you need. You never know when the urge to dance may strike!
